Matariki Celebration | Performances & Sausage Sizzle

This week Wednesday the school celebrated Matariki by having the Ukele group, Drumers group, Pacifica group, and the Kapa Haka group perform at the juniors and also by having a free sausage sizzle. Everyone sat on the junior benches as Ms Whaea Odie said a karakia translated in Maori and English. Then Ms Whaea Odi began to sing he honore and everybody joined in. The first group to perform was Kapa Haka. They danced to 3 different songs - Tamaki e, Tenei matou, Rona, and the boys preformed the haka afterwards. The junior kapa haka performed too. The next group to perform was the drummers which were Mr Matt, Andrew, Junior, and Mataio. The Ukulele group performed after the drummers and their were only 3 members - Angela, Avalon, and Florence. Ms Whaea Odi sang lean on me in the background as they played. I thought they did a great job since they didn't have much practice and the only time they did was on that day. The last group to perform was the pacifica group that I was apart of. In the end we had our sausage sizzle and everyone could get two sausages each. We sat on junior benches and ate then had our lunch time play.

Matariki | Maori

This week LS1 worked collaborative to create a D.L.O about Matariki. I worked with Afatia, Viva, and Nickaela to make a google presentation show how Matariki is celebrated, 3 facts about Matariki, the name of the 7 stars, and a song that the we learnt in Te Reo Maori. We had to discuss with each other and research to find out more information. I enjoyed and had fun working and creating the D.L.O with LS2.

Maori | Matariki

This week for Maori we have been talking about Matariki. We practiced learning the songs and sang them with Ms Whaea Odi. Then we each got a Maori word search paper. We had to write our names and find all the words. At the back of the paper we had to write of the songs we had learnt. The words are - awa, waka, maunga, moana, tamanuitera, rangi, whare, whanau, rakau, ika, manu, and kumara. We had to find 12 different words. In the end we had to give the paper back. Matariki is a celebration for Maori were whanau come together and eat kai.

This week LS1 had maori with Ms Whaea Odi. Today we were learning about the Matariki. We learnt a new song about Matariki and found some videos that told Matariki stories. Here are a few videos I found on YouTube that tell a Matariki story - The Story of Matariki, A Matariki Story, and Matariki. Matariki is the 7 sisters or the 6 sisters and the mother. Their names are Waiti, Waita, Waipunarangi, Tupanuku, Tupuarangi and Ururangi. Matariki is a maori celebration on June 15th to celebrate Maori new year with a feast. The Maori name for Matariki is Pleiades and the Japanese word for Matariki is Subaru.

Matariki Questions

LI: To develop and understanding of the different elements of Matariki.
I Learnt more about the different Maori Legends and Myths while researching some of them and more about Matariki itself. I watched a video which was about someone telling and explaining their own story of Matariki then I took that some of the information I needed to answer the the questions you see above. I added a picture of the 7 stars of Matariki to show you what they look like and a text box saying Matariki.
