Kupe & Captain James Cook's Journey to Aoteroa (MAP)

This week for Inquiry we are learning about explorers and adventurers. So a group of us collaboratively created a map that showed the journey of Kupe’s and Captain James Cook’s discovery of New Zealand. This took three of us, Haylee, Fau and Victoria to research about Kupe and the others Chris, Sulia, and Giovanni working on James Cook. We were able to locate where their Journey began and finished, and also making it interactive.x

Exploring National Current Events

This week for Reading we created a Google map about National Current events using the Kiwi Kids News site to look at what is happening in New Zealand. I worked with Chavda, Fui, Florence, and Nyjah to find out where things are taking place and locating and placing them on our map. The following activity was to create an awareness poster about one of the events. We chose measles because it's becoming a big problem in New Zealand, starting to spread.

Stand Up - A History of Protest in New Zealand

This week in reading, Waiheke group read a book about some of New Zealand's most historical protests. This book was called "Stand Up - A History of Protest in New Zealand".  During reciprocal reading, we made a list of vocabulary, questions, and predictions. The task was to complete a literacy weaving from everyone making their own strip and using two words each from the book. I chose Protest Signs and The Depression Riots. Our summary above made up of two example protests in the book, shows how the people protested and why. What is protesting? It is expressing your opinion on a cause using signs, banners, marches, etc.

Early Maori Enterprise & Economics

This week for inquiry we've been looking at Maori enterprise and economics. Learning about when it started, and how it started. In small groups we made a short summary of what we learnt in 5 sentences. Then we made those 5 sentences shorter by using only 10 syllables in each. To do this we used clapping and stomping methods to count them. Everyone's finished summary was recorded and preformed in-front of the class. Here are the both of them:

Original Summary:
Early Maori enterprise started years back. Maori were the first people to start economy in Aotearoa establishing bartering and trading systems between each other. They began to produce and sell more items and market mainly with food. They grew selling livestock and crop. Unfortunately their sales dropped when they lost most of their land and ownership to the crown.
Changed Summary:
Mao-ri en-ter-prise star-ted years a-go. Mao-ri in-tro-duced econ-omy with trad-ing. Pro-du-cing and mar-ket-ing more i-tems. U-sing live-stock, crop, and farm to bar-ter. Un-for-tu-nate-ly sales dropped from lost land.

Life in New Zealand | Activity 3 (Day 5) - Summer Learning Journey

New Zealand, one of the spectacular countries known to me. The blue oceans are so calming, and the healthy green trees are very welcoming. Full of safe communities and respecting people everywhere.  The places I've seen will always be in my head when I think of here. Experienced some of my best times and met people I can trust. New Zealand, I am glad to call a home. - Victoria

Finishing off Summer Learning Journey Week 1 Activities, I completed the 3rd  Task of Day 5. For this activity I needed to write a description of what life is like in New Zealand for 2018 using detail to create pictures  and feelings. I describe the environment, people, and sightings. This really got me thinking about the country and had me to be descriptive about my personal life here.

Top 3 Fun Facts about New Zealand | Activity 1 - Summer Learning Journey

This week LS1 has began our start on completing the week 1 activities for the Summer Learning Journey. The first activity was to read facts from the provided site and choose 3 top facts about New Zealand. The 3 Facts were what interested me most and were extra information adding on to my knowledge about New Zealand. It was fun to read more about this country and create my D.L.O.
