Treaty of Waiting - Collaborative Summary

Te Tiriti o Waitangi is a very important time in New Zealand history. In 1860, representatives from the British Crown and Maori Chiefs signed a treaty of agreement, to let the Maori have ownership over their land and property. Partnership, Participation, Protection (or the 3 P's) were the underlining principles under the treaty. They got the treaty to be signed by over 500 Maori chiefs.

 

In reading we looked at the Treaty of Waitangi, and explored what really happened in our history/past. In small collaborative groups, we read something that explained the story and summarized our understanding. I worked with Florence, Sakina, Haylee, Taheesha, Miiana, and Ellenora. The highlighted words in our summary above, are the keywords we used from our vocabulary list.

The Vile Victorians (Horrible Histories) | Presentation + Kahoot

For reading we explored Horrible History books and created interactive presentations to showcase our learning in-front of the class. My partner, Florence, and I read "The Vile Victorians". We specifically looked at the child labor and schooling pages because that really interested us. We were inspired to create a Kahoot quiz using the same questions, answers, and information from the book. The point was to guess the punishment fit for the school crime. What I discovered was how in the Victorian time, it was normal for teachers to physically punish their students. 

20 Word Summary & Picture | Waltzing Matilda

This week in reading we took a look at Australian poem written by Andrew Barton about a swag-man and his crime called Waltzing Matilda. We defined a few words in the poem that we didn't understand, and went over the meaning behind it. In partners, we made a summary of the poem by listing 20 words in the poem, then filtering it down to the 6 most important words and making a summary using those words. Then thinking about the first paragraph, we created an imaginative drawings of what it might look like as the poem had no pictures to go with the writing. I drew the Coolibah tree, the billy boil, the water-hole, and of course the man by the Coolibah tree, singing.

Te Tiriti o Waitangi | Summary & Vocab

This week in Reading we looked at an online book about Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and created a google presentation in groups of 4 looking at summary and vocab slides. I worked with Florence, Jonathan, and Neveah to read each part of the story and write a summary of it, also as two new words from the text. The last slide, we showed the negatives and benefits, also as the top few slides were questions.

3 Point Summary

L.I: To write a 3 point summary about an article.
Today for Reading, we had to read a article about the Annual Niuean sports day. For this task, we were able to work in partners or not. I worked in a pair with Sakina. Then we had to create a 3 point summary by choosing 3 W's out of all the 5 W's. We chose - When, Who and What. We had to write when it happened in the book, Who was involved and What happened. Then we also had to write a connection to those things. Our what connection is how we had an Athletics sports day as well but it was all of the people of panmure bridge school. My who connection is, some peope from Tamaki College and the whole of panmure bridge school. Lastly, my when connection was that it was also in summer, outside on the fields and at school.

For this weeks activity we had to write the 5 W's and 1 H to the story - Duck overboard - which we read about a week ago. We then had to write a summary using the words we wrote in 25 words or less. We also wrote what we thought the key words from the title were, key words from the sub heading, and new words we didn't know the meaning of. I learnt more about being able to explain what the main idea was using skim and scan strategy.
