Probability Tree

 LI: To use probability trees to find the chances of an event. This week in Math, Sakina, Haylee and I worked together to solve probability questions. We were given three different math word story problems to justify the answer of the probability with our working out. We then created a DLO of one question and explained our thinking with the probability tree method. We enjoyed working these equations out as we tried used a different strategy and learnt a new strategy.

Solving with long division


L.I: To be able to explain the steps of long division.
This week in Math, we learned a new strategy called long division. This is used to solve all sorts of division questions using a certain process that breaks down the strategy in an easy way to understand. After we tested our understanding by solving a few questions and playing a game to try calculating the answers by ourselves. Florence and I worked together to create our DLO about how to do long division by using one of the questions in our maths book as an example. I feel very confident using long division and is one of the strategies I want to try including in my learning since it's actually simpler than it looks. My Blog post Analysis 2020


This week in Maths we created graphs and analyses on our blog post data. We've been learning online throughout the COVID-19 lock down so it would be realistic to try and set a blogging goal for ourselves. I used the information of how much work I did in the years I've been blogging (2016 - 2020). We also found an average meaning the standard number out of all of did. To find this I divided the total amount of blogpost I did that year by the months I was blogging.

Maths Challenge Exponents


In maths we've been learning about exponents and trying to solve questions with these numbers in it. We practiced using exponents as a way to simplify an answer like 5 x 5 x 5 x 5 x 5 = 3125. The word problem about the Lernaean Hydra, is trying to get us to solve how many heads would grow in three to ten days of trying to kill it.

Kahoa Lole | Daily Maths Challenge 1


This week for the first maths daily challenge, we look at a story about Nana making Kahoa Loles for prize giving. I needed to figure out how many she would be able to make depending on the amount of lollies she had. You can see the way I solved each of the questions, using multiplication to find the amount of Kahoa Loles and addition to find the left over amount of lollies. I really enjoyed doing this activity because I can look at how I solve problems like these and see if there are other strategies I could've used.

McDonalds Daily Maths Challenge


For last weeks daily math challenge we looked at the McDonald's statistics for Day 1 level 3 of lock down. Using the information and story we were given, we answered the two main questions about how long it took to serve all the cars in total, and what time it was by the time they finished. Florence, Sakina, Haylee, and I worked together to create this DLO and made up three of our own questions as well. Can you find the answers? I really enjoyed collaborating with a few of my friends and solving this creative maths activity.

Maths Team Challenge

 
This week for Maths we created two DLOs showing how we solved two team challenges that involved adding decimals. Using the most effective strategy we found the answer. The most effective strategies were written algorithms and place value. In this session we were learning rounding and compensating. The two questions we tried to solve were:
5.75 + 2.0 = 7.75 x 12 = ?
218.99 + 109.85 = ?

Maths Challenge Question


This week in Maths we made a collaborative DLO with some questions that were based on the Auckland Marathon statistics. The information in these statistics described the number of Marathon Participants, an amount of objects, or when the event would be taking place. We tried exploring different strategies and using a variety of math language in our questions. Our group was able to come up with no less than 5 challenge questions.

Ciao, my name is Victoria! I’m a year 8 student at Panmure Bridge school, and also the Manaiakalani Leader for 2020. I really love music! One of my current artists I’m listening to is Doja Cat, and J. Cole. My favorite subject in school is writing and reading, because it’s really fun to write my own stories and read fictional books...Roald Dahl is one of the best authors! Transformations


This week for Maths, we created a poster to remind us about the 5 different types of transformations that we looked at. These were translation, enlargement, reflection, rotation and symmetry. We created our own shapes and objects using only 3 shapes. Using triangle and 2 rectangles, I made a rocket. Can you match the shown changes with their written value?

Rugby World Cup Maths (Stadiums)


This week in Maths we looked at the Rugby world cup being held in Japan this year. We collaborated in small groups of three and two to solve the seven questions related to our learning. We had to use our  many strategies to solve things about the rugby stadium capacity and difference. In example of one of the questions for the DLO, was if 2/3 of City of Toyota Stadium and 3/5 of the Shizuoka Stadium Ecopa were filled who had the fullest stadium? See how we worked it out above.

Interactive Maths Quiz


This is my interactive maths game, to practise a mix of multiplication and decimal problems in written form. There are only 5 questions, with either a correct or incorrect answer and a reaction page that i’d like you all to use to give me feedback on my quiz. Note that you can always use a hint, and remember to think about the question carefully. Peers testing my game, and playing others games have helped me bring mine to the next level by looking at my layout, font, colouring, and sizing. Feedback from my teacher was to look at unnecessary capitals in some of the equations. It’ll be obvious if you get it the answer wrong or right, so you can try again or continue to the next question. I really enjoyed creating my own character and making it move, using a GIF maker site. Enjoy!

Collaborative Maths Vocabulary Challenge


L.I: Strengthening connections to Maths Language.

This week in Maths we completed a Maths Vocabulary challenge to help strength our maths language. As a class, we first explored the different ways of saying "Hello", looking at it in different languages and how we use the word in different situations. Then we were asked to discuss the word "plane" with a partner. Out of misunderstanding, everyone thought of it as a air-craft and not the maths meaning of it being a flat plane (surface). We worked collaboratively in pairs to drag words in their related topics being either Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Equality, Inequality, Variable, and Answer using a the explore tool and maths dictionary to find out what some words mean and trying to place each word in a section. Doing this activity will help me understand a wider range of Maths meanings when it comes to problems.

Multiplication Written Strategy (Place Value)

Last week we were using as many different multiplication strategies to solve 10 equations. Then we were to choose 1 strategy out of the ones we did that was easiest for us. Then there were 3 multiplication written strategies, and we had to pick one of them to show others that strategy to solve it. The equation is about the cupcake factory, and I chose to do it with the place value strategy.

Blog Post Data Analysis


In Maths we took a look at the amount of blog posts we published each month from the year we started blogging to this current year. Then we analysed that information and made it into a statistical information graph. Everyone found their average amount of blog posts per year, and a statement for why there was more or less posts done. I found it interesting that every year I improved and each year the total amount of blog posts grew. My goal for 2019 is to reach 500 posts this year. I already have over 1000, 1025 to be specific and if I accomplished this I would have 1525.

5 Stations | Problems


 This week for maths we got into groups and rotated around the room to 5 different stations. I worked with Florence, Alice, and Farzana. We had to try to get as much done of each stations because there were materials needed for each seperate one and problems for us to solve. We also had to create a presentation of the stations and write about them. The work was done physically but the papers were also online. We took photos of our finished work and put it on a slide on the presentation. We were able to complete all the stations and write about them.

3D Models | Toothpicks & Blu tac


L.I: To construct models of polyhedra using everyday materials.
This week for maths we created 3D shapes using toothpicks and blu tac. I decided to create two shapes, a cube and a traingular prism. Once we created the shapes we had to take photos of them and stick them onto a google slide. I included the amount of vertices, edges, and faces each of the shapes had. Each of them were fun to created and didn't take over 5 minutes to complete. I decided to write in a short description the process I went through making it. We had to make a template for each model/shape as well.

Adding Fractions with Different Denominators


L.I: To add and subtract fractions with unlike and like denominators.
This week for maths we learnt to add fractions that have different denominators. Then we had to create a D.L.O to show our learning on how to do it. I used a google slide and my problem I chose was 2/5 + 4/6. For my problem, you multiply 2/5 by 6 and 4/6 by 5. The denominator would be 30 and the numerator was 32 by adding the two multiplyed numerators.

Multiplying Fractions | Animation (3/5 x 10)


L.I: Find fractions of whole number amounts using multiplication and division.
This week for Math we learnt how to multiply fractions. To multiply fractions you don't change or touch the denominator. You multiply the amount you have of the fractions with the multiply to get the answer. Say if it was 45/5, that would be the improper answer. The proper answer would be 9 wholes. To show our learning we had to create an animation showing how to multiply with a fraction. The problem I decided to pick 3/5 x 10. For the animation I used shapes, arrows, lines to show what was going on, and text to tell in a short description what was going on. The answer to my problem was 30/5 but the improper fractions was 6 wholes.

Fractions | Proper, Improper, Mixed Numbers



 L.I: To show fractions in percentages and decimals.
This week for math we are learning about fractions. We had to create copies of two google draws showing fractions. In the first there was a template with a fraction and we had to show what type of fraction it is like improper, proper and mixed. We also had to show the equivalent of the fraction and showing it using materials. At the bottom we had to write a text explaining fractions as well. In the other google drawing we had to fraction in percentages and decimals. We also had to show it using materials as well.
