For this next Summer Learning Journey activity, we looked at a young woman named Malala Yousafzai. I've heard about her before, and her story is very inspirational. She is a Pakistani activist who wants female education. But she is also a survivor and fighter. Malala survived an assassination attempt, and has since recovered. She lives her life continuing her career, and is currently 22 years young. Malala created a children's book called "Malala's Magical Pen". Inspired by that, our task was to write a short story/narrative about anything. This is a made up story called "The Man on the Moon" about a boy called George and the mysterious far away person on the moon, who he talks to at night. Enjoy!

Quick Narrative | Monster & Knight
L.I: To write a quick narrative.
This week for writing everyone chose out of 4 photos what they would like to do for their narrative. Then we went away and spent only 40 minutes to write it. I decided to choose the 4th photo of a knight and giant monster. We had to use a narrative planner and write the orientation, problem, events, and solution. The title of my narrative is "The fight of Ayvar and Jaheim" which are the main characters names. The steps that we went over when writing is B.P.D.E.P which stands for Brainstorming, Planning, Drafting, Editing, and Publishing. When editing we had to correct any spelling, sentences, or non-interesting or unnecessary ideas. You can read my finished narrative above (or below from the link), and look at the photo I used to base my story off.

Narrative Writing | Campfire
This week for writing we created a narrative based off a photo of two kids sitting around a campfire. We did brainstorming on coggleto write down all the ideas, and planning by doing the backwards S strategy and covering the basic parts of the narrative. The characters are Jess and Jeff, and the parents are Milli and Christopher. The two kids get seperated from the parents and need to find their way back. I also included extra parts in mine. The problem was that they were lost and I also added another problem that has to do with a bear. I had a lot of ideas but decided to title it as, The Campfire.

Narrative Planner | Manaiakalani Film Festival
This week for writing we had to write a narrative planner based on the LS1 mini olympics for the Manaiakalani Film Festival. To get an idea of what it would be like, we watched a parody video. Then we got into groups of three. I worked with Farzana, and Sandra. Then the groups made a copy of a google doc narrative planner. Then they written down as a group how they think the film would be and how it would play out, including dialogue. On the doc was a template where we had to write the title, orientation, problem, events, and the solution of the film (narrative). On the side we wrote in a basic sentence what it would be about then on the other side write it in more detail. The narrative also had to be atleast funny because it is trying to entertain other people. We had a short time to work on it but we were able to finish most of it as every member in the group helped. Our planner doesn't included the dialogue but the complete narrative does which is the D.L.O used in this post. In the end one groups narrative writing will be pick as the one used in the film.

Show & Tell | Descriptive Writing
L.I: To write a descriptive scene.
This week for writing we are learning how to make our stories better and more interesting by using descriptive writing. We are talking about show and tell so that we can learn the differences and use show in our writing. We had to create a copy of a google drawing and use a photo to show what the story would be about. We had to show the differences of show and tell by writing two short paragraphs using the photo as a reference to the story. There were two separate boxes for the "tell" description and the "show" description. "Show" is using more detail and using descriptive language and "tell" is telling exactly what is going on or exactly what happened. The photo used was father and his daughter going into the ocean.

Narrative | Structure & Language
L.I: To identify the structure and language features of a narrative.
This week for writing we are looking at narratives. We had to make a DLO showing the structure and language of a narrative to remind and help us. First we got into groups then discussed about what we know or remember about narratives. We also had a look at the text reminders for narrative to find out more. The writing groups each read two narratives - Kites Tail and The Invasion. These were examples to help us with being able to find the different things of a narrative. For the task I decided to use a google draw for this because it was the best for this kind of task. I added separate boxes to divided the different topics. In the DLO I talked about what a narrative is, the structure, the language, and extra info which were more like tips when writing a narrative. Another word narrative is story which is an imaginary or fictional story made to entertain the reader.

Narrative Illustration
This week for writing we had to get into groups of 3 people. In that group of people we had to create a narrative on a sheet of paper. How this would work is everyone in the group had to fold the sheet of paper into 3 parts. We all had to write the first part of the narrative in the first box then pass the paper on so then everyone could get to write on the sheet of paper and so the narrative would be random. When you passed it on to the next person, you had to fold the paper so they couldn't see what you have written. Before actually writing the narrative we had to plan it out. The characters were Florb and Umm and they were aliens. They have a pet named Broly which is a giant slug. The problem was that Broly destroys the city and the solution is a new super hero was born. The beginning had to start with - On a planet far away, the next paragraph had to start with - One day, the second to last paragraph had to start with - The next day then the last part which was the solution had to start with - Finally. You only had 10 minutes to write. In my group of three I had Mele and Sakina. After writing we had to look at it and see which narrative makes the most sense since there were 3 options. Then after choosing we had to create a google presentation with 4 slides and illustrate the 4 paragraphs.

Completed Narrative - Jack, Jill and the unexpected Halloween night
Jack,Jill and the unexpected Halloween night…
Halloween Night:
*Bang, Bang, Bang! “Trick or treat!” Jack heard kids knocking on the neighbours door. He stretched and stared at the small part of the moon that slightly shone through the kitchen window with a frown. “Are you ready yet?”, He questioned exhausted, “Yes, I am now” Jill responded. A big smile grew on Jack's face as he raced to the front door, he had been waiting for Jill to get ready for over hours.
A witches treat:
It was around 6:00 or 7:00 and they were on their way to go trick or treating. Jack’s feet were aching from when he walked around the house waiting for Jill to finish getting ready. They knocked on their first house hoping to receive more than just 1 piece of candy. “Trick or treat!”, they shouted. Seconds later the door opened. relieving an old lady dressed as a witch. She grabbed 2 big handfuls of out of her bowl of starbursts and s-l-o-w-l-y sprinkled it in their bags before they skipped off to the next house..
The shed:
Leaves brushed against their shoes, Jack could hear his sister's teeth chattering. The wind glided against his face and as exhaling, fog would escape out his mouth. About now they were their 5th house. Jill complained about how she was getting cold and her feet were aching, their bags were already full of delicious candy. Even smelling it for too long could give you a headache, so they tried finding somewhere warmer to rest. Later they stumbled across a shed like basement that was just slightly more warm than outside. The floors made an irritating creek after every step that they made. Webs coated the walls and corners of the roof. Dust rained down as if it was snowing and a revolting smell spread around the room and filled their nose.
Monsters feast/Jack’s Death:
*Crunch...crunch...crunch* The sound of leaves being walked on came from outside the shed. Jack and Jill stopped rolling the marble they found from the corner of the shed to each other. Jack slowly tiptoed outside to see what was going on. It was just a strange black cat as dark as a shadow that just stared at Jack while licking its paw. Jack followed it to a swamp but before he could realise that, he tripped over a pile of crunchy leaves and twigs. Then as Jack got up and dusted himself off, a strange figure grew out the swamp, it had 2 small horns and the tips were sharper than a butcher's knife. He had 5 eyeballs and his eyelids were covered in a green goo. Jack screamed and in attempt to run the monster instantly gripped him tight and swallowed him whole.
Jill’s revenge:
Jill came running after hearing Jack’s loud scream. She grabbed a sharp rock from beside her foot and sprinted towards him in attempt to tackle. She was about the size of newly grown bush to him. She took grip of his left horn while striking her sharp rock against his ruff fur. A liquid yellow substance leaked out the cuts, then seeping through her costume. She felt nothing but anger and sadness, maybe even a bit of guilt. “I should have stayed with him, I should have just went with him!,” she angrily thought to herself. For her brother had passed away. Or did he?...
An unexpected survival:
Jill slowly moved back in fear, “something” unexpectedly bursted out of the monster's stomach. This time it was a human like figure. “It couldn’t be?... could it?” Jill thought to herself. She thought she was going crazy for thinking it could be...Jack, but as the figure got closer Jill realised that it was him! Just covered in the yellow goop. Without a care she ran up to go hug him. She inhaled and exhaled deeply in relief as they listened to the screaming of the wind that came from afar. Later on they walked back home knowing that halloween night will always be remember and the most strangest and unexpected. Their promise of the day, was to never go trick or treating again.
L.I: To proofread and edit.
I learnt more about writing a full narrative and to attract the reader using onomatopoeia.
I took my ideas from my narrative plan, then inserted them in my completed narrative and named the paragraphs depending on what it is about.

Narrative Planning
L.I: To plan a narrative.
I learnt to plan a narrative and also the when describing
the characters using personality and about specific facial
features.
Just for now we starting off only filling in the orientation, which is the title, setting, when, and the characters. We got a full planning google draw and either added characters but including Jack, Jill and the monster or add a setting or a when. We first made up 3 titles and chose the one we thought was the best. My characters were Jack, Jill, Aunt Lucinda, Cat, Monster, and Evil Minions. The underlined title is the one I chose to be for my official story.
