Maori | Nga Taone

This week for maori we had to match the english translations to the maori name and we listened to 5 maori song of a Christmas songs and guess the christmas song it was and also we had to use a dictionary to find out what the places were. We also had to find out the part it is from either north island,south island and some couldn't all be answered.

Maori | Rētihi Poster

This week we had Maori with Ms. Whaea Odie. Today we watched a clip about a myth story of how the south of New Zealand came to be with animated movements. It was really interesting to watch and entertaining of the graphics and motions on the screen. Then we had to go and find a partner and create a poster about a food/s. To do that, Ms. Whaea Odie gave the partners a number, then they had to go and find the food that was numbered the same number as them. My partner was Alayah, and we were given number six which was lettuce and beetroot. Our poster was about lettuce. It all had to be written in maori and not much english words. The photo we used on our poster was labelled for re-use, and majority of the poster is english, but the definition of lettuce is written in maori though.  Lettuce in maori is Rētihi. Alayah and I were able to find out more about lettuce as we re-searched to fill out our poster.

Paikea Poster | Maori

This week Wednesday we had a session of maori with Whaea Odie. This week we made a poster about Paikea since we learnt about it a few weeks ago. First our Whaea Odie told us the story of The Clay women with visual pictures of the pages in the book. It was about how humans in the Maori traditions were created since there were already gods. The poster was intended for people who don't know about Paikea and etc to find out about it. Before going off and creating our own posters, we talked about examples of what we could include in our post and words to do with Paikea. In my poster I included a short description about Paikea and drew a whale with a person on it resembling tahuhu and the book about Paikea. We had to share our poster with Whaea Odie once we were done.

Te Huarere (weather) | Maori

This week Wednesday we had another Maori Session with Ms. Whaea Ode. This week she read us a story about the weather in Maori. On the board we had to research Mt. Everest, Wanaka, Lake Wakatipu, and Tairawhiti. Then we had to make a D.L.O either a google presentation or google draw, and write about the weather for the past few days from Sunday until this Wednesday in Maori. On Sunday it was cloudy, Monday was rainy, Tuesday was Rainy, and Wednesday (today) is Sunny. I worked with Kaitlyn and together we made a google presentation. We each did two slides about the weather and found a photo of the weather in Auckland to represent it.

Maori Lesson

This week we had another Maori session with Ms. Whaea Ode. In this lesson our teacher read us a book called Remember that November which is a New Zealand book about guy fox day which is coming up this November the 5th. Then we had to research on google maps where Taranaki and Parahaki are located in New Zealand. We also had to research Parahaki on wikepedia to find out more about the event and important information we will need in the next session when we re-write the story. Maori Session | In the Beginning

This week Wednesday we had the first Maori session of term 4 with Ms. Whaea Odi. In this session we were read the story "In the Beginning" by Whaea Odi and then watched a video of the story created in sand art. We then rehearsed the lyrcis of a Maori song called - Hoki Mai e Tama Ma and looked at the lyrics for it which the page had in English and Maori. Then we researched and looked at the tribal areas (rohe) in Aoteroa/New Zealand. Here are the sites I checked out - Map | Te Kahui Mangai, and Trible-areas. We would continue to learn the song and the areas. We also talked about how New Zealand was discovered by a man named Kahe and his wife. They were in the pacifics and used the coconuts there, for food and drink on the way. They followed the way of the stars when It was night and the sun when morning. They moved there for more space because the islands were small and it would be too crowded there so they discovered New Zealand and moved there. In the next lesson we would be talking a bit more about the tribal areas and the song.

Matariki Celebration | Performances & Sausage Sizzle

This week Wednesday the school celebrated Matariki by having the Ukele group, Drumers group, Pacifica group, and the Kapa Haka group perform at the juniors and also by having a free sausage sizzle. Everyone sat on the junior benches as Ms Whaea Odie said a karakia translated in Maori and English. Then Ms Whaea Odi began to sing he honore and everybody joined in. The first group to perform was Kapa Haka. They danced to 3 different songs - Tamaki e, Tenei matou, Rona, and the boys preformed the haka afterwards. The junior kapa haka performed too. The next group to perform was the drummers which were Mr Matt, Andrew, Junior, and Mataio. The Ukulele group performed after the drummers and their were only 3 members - Angela, Avalon, and Florence. Ms Whaea Odi sang lean on me in the background as they played. I thought they did a great job since they didn't have much practice and the only time they did was on that day. The last group to perform was the pacifica group that I was apart of. In the end we had our sausage sizzle and everyone could get two sausages each. We sat on junior benches and ate then had our lunch time play.

Matariki | Maori

This week LS1 worked collaborative to create a D.L.O about Matariki. I worked with Afatia, Viva, and Nickaela to make a google presentation show how Matariki is celebrated, 3 facts about Matariki, the name of the 7 stars, and a song that the we learnt in Te Reo Maori. We had to discuss with each other and research to find out more information. I enjoyed and had fun working and creating the D.L.O with LS2.

Maori | String Shapes

Today LS1 had maori with Ms. Whaea Odi. Today we were learning to do Whai which is cats cradle. We were given string and looked at a video to help us create different shapes. In the image I created a diamond shape. Some were difficult to learn but I was able to manage shaping others. I also created the parachute shaped one which was also one of the simplest ones but one of my favorites too. 

Maori | Matariki

This week for Maori we have been talking about Matariki. We practiced learning the songs and sang them with Ms Whaea Odi. Then we each got a Maori word search paper. We had to write our names and find all the words. At the back of the paper we had to write of the songs we had learnt. The words are - awa, waka, maunga, moana, tamanuitera, rangi, whare, whanau, rakau, ika, manu, and kumara. We had to find 12 different words. In the end we had to give the paper back. Matariki is a celebration for Maori were whanau come together and eat kai.

Maori | Matariki

This week LS1 had maori with Ms Whaea Odi. Today we were learning about the Matariki. We learnt a new song about Matariki and found some videos that told Matariki stories. Here are a few videos I found on YouTube that tell a Matariki story - The Story of Matariki, A Matariki Story, and Matariki. Matariki is the 7 sisters or the 6 sisters and the mother. Their names are Waiti, Waita, Waipunarangi, Tupanuku, Tupuarangi and Ururangi. Matariki is a maori celebration on June 15th to celebrate Maori new year with a feast. The Maori name for Matariki is Pleiades and the Japanese word for Matariki is Subaru.

Maori | Kei te pehea koe?

This week LS1 had maori with ms Whaea Odi. This week we were finishing off our pepeha's and also thinking about the question kei te pehea koe? which means how are you. We thought of 4 different ways to answer that question - kei te pai, kei te makariri, kei te riri, and kei te wera. pai is good, makariri is cold, riri is angry, and wera is hot. After learning to say those we drew them on a sheet of paper to show the feelings or expressions. We also learnt a new maori song this week and learnt the translation of some of the words in it. 

Maori Pepeha

This week we had Maori with Ms Whaea Odi. For this lesson we had to make a google presentation. Today we would be writing our pepeha but a little different. The first slide would be the title of the presentation then the next slide would be the first part of the "pepeha" and for this we said a greeting and our name in maori. Ms Whaea Odi helped us and told us what to write. The next slide was our location in moari. The slide after that talked about our parents names and the last one was the names of our sister and brothers (siblings). We then had to add photos in each slide. I wasn't able to get photos of my parents. I also added a slide at the end which showed my complete pepeha all together.

Maori

This week Wednesday LS1 had Maori with Ms Whaea Odi. Each of us were given a sheet of paper which had a picture of the New Zealand map. A list of names were on the top of the paper that were different places and using our devices we had to try and find where they are on the map. A bunch of numbers were scattered around the New Zealand map on our paper depending on where a place was located. Then looking at the map online we had to find what number it was as from on the map on the sheet of paper. After that we then had to find the text box for that number and write the Maori name of that place. We were able to work in pairs to help one another out to do this activity. At first I didn't understand how I was suppose to do it but then I quickly caught on to it ticked off the places that I have done. Although I didn't get through all of it I managed to get most of them done.

Maori Language Week

Today we had Maori Language Week. When creating our DLO we had to include - Calender Refrences in maori, Singing Happy Birthday in maori, Greetings and our own pepaha. I did the activity by creating a google slide and making and having a slide for each topic. I worked in a pair who was Sakina. We added links to where you can hear us say whatever we put in maori so you can also know how it was pronounced. The only thing we did not include greetings. We were able to speak maori and type the words was by the help of translating a few words and researching, some of them we already knew. We made the videos on wevideo then dowloaded them and inserted them onto the google slide. We hope you enjoy our slide and learn something new like I did. I learnt more about maori like how to sing happy birthday and what a pepeha is and what it is.
